Hight Logistics started in 2011 as a drayage company at the Port of Long Beach, and drayage is still the core of it. What changed is how much of the move the company handles itself.
Hight runs its own drivers and dispatch out of a secure yard in Long Beach — fenced, gated and guarded, with camera coverage, lighting and controlled access, dock access for ocean containers and over-the-road trailers, and on-site reefer plugs and diesel gensets. Alongside port drayage the operation covers cross-dock and transloading, warehousing and container storage, over-the-road, out-of-gauge and reefer freight.
That combination is unusual in an industry that mostly runs on subcontracting. It is the reason a customer talks to the same company about the truck, the chassis, the yard and the appointment.

Rudy Diaz arrived at Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, Virginia from Watts, California. James “Jay” Hight — ninth-grade English teacher, school librarian, advisor and proofreader — came out of his house with an umbrella to meet him.

[h_quote cite=”Rudy Diaz” role=”Founder, Hight Logistics”]
During my four years at Virginia Episcopal School, Mr. Hight (also the school’s librarian) was my 9th grade English teacher, an advisor, a proofreader for my English essays, a person I could joke with, a fan of the sports I played in, but most importantly, he was a sincere friend. He taught me the importance of writing ‘Thank you’ cards to my classmates’ parents who hosted me at their homes or to anyone who did something kind.

Mr. Hight took him to his first Broadway show and to Princeton, and later to landmarks around his own hometown of Lexington, Virginia. The two stayed in touch by letter and email through college and Rudy’s first years back in California. Mr. Hight died on April 26, 2013.
Hight Logistics Inc. was established as a business name on November 1st, 2011, in his honor. His grace, compassion and love left a lasting impression, and the company works to carry the same values into how it treats clients, carriers, employees and the Earth.

Hight Electric is the part of the operation running battery-electric Class 8 drayage. It runs in Southern California, where the charging is: Hight’s own coverage map puts the electric fleet at up to 200 miles round trip on a single charge, across the Los Angeles and Long Beach basin.
Charging sits on the same yard as dispatch, which is what makes the lanes plannable rather than experimental. Ask us which lanes qualify.
The brand relationship between Hight Logistics and Hight Electric is provisionally preserved as a named sub-brand pending a decision.

Hight supports Evertreen, which plants and tracks trees with local communities, and the Ocean Conservancy, which works on ocean pollution — including the share of it that comes from shipping.
These are contributions, not offsets. Hight does not claim that either one cancels the emissions of a container move. The electric fleet is where emissions actually come out of the operation, and that is where the investment goes.
